June 18, 2000

Not much to write tonight, since I didn’t do much of anything today. In fact, I slept till 11:00! It was glorious. I took a shower and watched Stargate with Shannon on the movie channel.

For lunch, I had my first taste of the kibbutz cafeteria, which was pretty decent. It’s the meatless suppers that are gonna kill me. I could never eat kosher. What I wouldn’t give right now for a pizza with meat on it, or a bacon cheeseburger (double un-kosher)! We revel in McDonalds, where you can get cheese on your burger . . . Burger King is kosher.

After lunch, Dr. B came around and said that our passes were good for several more sites, so we could hop on the van and go do some more touring. I jumped at that! Ten of us piled into the van and headed out to a nearby synagogue ruin from the fifth century AD. It was neat because the floor was a mosaic depicting the ark, Abraham and Isaac, and – the zodiac! They showed a video to accompany it, where they re-enacted the building process. At one part, a guy said, “The zodiac in our synagogue?” And the other guy said, “Everybody’s doing it.” We cracked up.

We piled back in the van and Dr. B said, “Hey, we could go to Beth Shean.” So there we went. They had a cool Roman ampitheater, columns, pavement, and mosaics. Nifty site.

When I got back, I finished reading the book to Shannon, then we walked to the cafeteria. Being full of chicken mcnuggets from our stop at the Beth Shean McDonalds, I did not partake of our first dairy supper.

We had orientation, and I was officially assigned to Dr. B digging the tenth century in area B2. Tomorrow we wake up at 4:30 and start the dig! I called Dad to tell him happy Father’s Day, and now I’m going to sleep!
