"I will tell you the tale of Tinúviel," said Strider, "in brief -- for it is a long tale of which the end is not known . . . It is a fair tale, though it is sad, as are all the tales of Middle-earth, and yet it may lift up your hearts." He was silent for some time, and then he began not to speak but to chant softly.

about

The tragic tale of Beren and Lúthien is mentioned briefly in The Lord of the Rings, and one can find the complete story in The Silmarillion. The tale of Aragorn and Arwen is understood as the completion of the story of Beren and Lúthien, but there is no comparison between Arwen and Lúthien. Like Arwen, Lúthien gives up her immortality for a mortal man. In everything else, however, she is like Éowyn of Rohan. She defies her father and goes on a quest to aid Beren, even facing Sauron himself. Why "Dusk-Singer"? It's a loose translation of "Tinúviel," which also means "nightengale." The painting is by Ted Nasmith.
