deliver us ~ the prince of egypt

The Prince of Egypt (1998) is an animated telling of the story of Moses, one of the greatest figures in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The imagery in the film is stunning and elegant, and the music (especially the opening number "Deliver Us") is powerful. One of the most effective elements is the decision to show a strong friendship and love between Rameses and Moses, rather than bitterness and competition. Their friendship makes the subsequent struggle all the more moving and, in the end, heartbreaking. Not only was the story wonderfully told and characterized, it was faithful to the original.

The film also features an amazing cast of voice talent: Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Goldblum, Helen Mirren, Danny Glover, Patrick Stewart, Steve Martin, and Martin Short.

Where can I learn more?
You can read about Moses in "Exodus," the second book in the Bible. There was also a great film called The Ten Commandments made in the 1950s, starring Charlton Heston (Ben Hur) and Yul Brynner (The King and I). And where else could you hear such great lines as "Come here, my little dove of Canaan" and "Moses, Moses, you stubborn, splendid, adorable fool"? ;-)
